AVANT GARDE MAKEUP
The Avant Garde style of makeup is known for using experimental methods to create unique, imaginative and modern looks. The style is all about being expressive through dramatic, creative art to invent a look that would be seen in high end fashion shows... not the kind of look you would see on a daily basis. An Avant Garde makeup look will usually be based around a certain theme (eg. fantasy), therefore the MUA will carry out research whilst planning their look to ensure they represent their theme accurately through their makeup. Additional materials are seen incorporated within these makeup looks which enhance the look making them appear more distinctive and memorable. Examples of unusual materials often seen in Avant Garde are flowers, leaves, gems, glitter, paint and feathers, although the possibilities are endless...
I was given a box of random items to choose something from and then incorporate it within my look, therefore I chose metallic paint and went on to design my own Avant Garde look. To make my look I used foundation which matches my models skin to create a natural looking base. I then groomed and defined my models eyebrows using a MAC brow gel before beginning the dramatic eye look. For the eyes I created a sharp, precise inner corner wing using a black eyeliner. The eyeliner contributed to the bold, dramatic look that I aimed to create. To finish the eyes I lined the waterline with black liner, applied mascara to the top lashes prior to adding fluffy black false lashes. I then moved on to applying the metallic paint with a large paint brush and fan makeup brush, creating a brush stroke effect. I decided to use the paint in bronze and gold shades to co-ordinate my models accessories (leopard headband), which helped tie the look together. The brush strokes were placed around the cheekbone, under the eyes, on the bridge of the nose and along the jawline. To complete the overall look, I used the metallic bronze shade on the lips.
Both myself and my model were very pleased with the final look and believe it accurately represents the Avant Garde style of makeup.
